The year 1999 was a pivotal year for movies. It marked the culmination of a creative surge that began in 1997 and would last until 2004. The Sundance Film Festival was still a small celebration of independent film. Video stores were everywhere. Guys like Kevin Smith and Paul Thomas Anderson were in the early stages of their careers, yet they were riding a wave of success following their debut movies. Going to the theater was exciting. Not every movie was good, as the below list shows. However, the ones that succeeded did so in such a convincing manner that they would headline the Top 10 lists of other years.
Here's what else was going on that year. The countdown to 2000 was underway. WWE (then known as WWF) was in the middle of the Attitude Era, making Monday Night Raw a must-see event. My internet provider was NetZero, which provided free dial-up internet access (along with a permanent pop-up ad window). The Academy Awards were worth watching. I was a senior in college. I lived in Reno, NV, where the mainstream theaters (Century Theaters) and the local indie theater (Keystone II Cinemas) were my go-to places to see most of these movies.
The Keystone II Cinemas was a two-screen theater located in the lower-level shopping area of the Reno Hilton (now the Grand Sierra Resort). The theaters had standard seating, as well as couches in the back rows (I don't remember how many). It closed in 2000. It was rarely full. I only saw the place packed twice, for 1998's Happiness and 1999's Boys Don't Cry. When I saw my final movie, Saving Grace, there in 2000, the crowd was larger than normal. As they say, it's hard to appreciate something until it's gone. (It has since re-opened as a second run theater under new owners, but I never returned after its 2000 closure.)
I created this special page for the films of 1999 in an effort to re-watch and review every movie from that year. It'll be like revisiting old friends. I also have the opportunity to watch movies I have never seen (as of this writing: The War Zone, Angela's Ashes, Snow Falling on Cedars, Wild Wild West, Music of the Heart, Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai). The Top 10 list and star ratings are subject to change. Until a movie is reviewed, the rating will reflect the rating I gave it at the time I saw it.
